About Farmers Cooperative

Farmers Cooperative Co. (FC) has corporate headquarters in Farnhamville, IA and is the largest farmer-owned local agriculture cooperative in Iowa. FC serves over 5,800 members throughout our trade territory of over 1,400,000 acres. Members are served from our 48 locations by a 350 employee team.

The culture at FC is one of openness, growth and opportunity, and structure. Whether you are a current member, new customer, current employee, or future employee, FC can provide you with endless opportunities as we continue to grow!

Below is the history of FC and how it became the Cooperative it is today:

FC was founded by the management and board of directors of Farmers Cooperative Company located in Farnhamville, IA. The first grain elevator was built in Farnhamville in 1881. About 25 years later, the elevator was incorporated by several area farmers and businessmen. In 1944, the board of directors decided to change the structure of the Company to a Cooperative as defined in an Iowa law passed in 1939.

In the early 1960's, the leadership of FC in Farnhamville determined the Cooperative needed to expand its membership territory if it were to remain viable and efficient in member service. The following are mergers and acquisitions that brought FC to what it is today:

  • 1963 - Rinard Cooperative (merger)
  • 1964 - Slifer Cooperative (merger)
  • 1972 - Swift Fertilizer Plant - Gowrie (acquisition)
  • 1973 - Cyanamid Fertilizer Plant - Lohrville (acquisition)

  • 1993 - Mid-Iowa Cooperative (merger by acquisition)
  • 1993 - Williams Milling Service - Sac City (acquisition)
  • 1996 - Cal-Car Service Company - Rockwell City (merger by acquisition)
  • 1997 - Odebolt Farmers Cooperative (merger by acquisition)
  • 1999 - Garst Retail Fertilizer - Coon Rapids (acquisition)
  • 2001 - Northland Cooperative - Thompson (merger by acquisition)

TO DO FOR FARMERS WHAT FARMERS CANNOT ECONOMICALLY DO FOR THEMSELVES, THROUGH OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
